I am delighted to welcome you to Gortnor Abbey, a co-educational school in a beautiful rural setting beside Lough Conn in north Mayo. Our surroundings create a calm and inspiring place where students can learn and grow.
The school is guided by the values of the Religious of Jesus and Mary under the trusteeship of the Le Chéile Trust. These values shape daily life at Gortnor Abbey and nurture a sense of belonging, responsibility and respect. We aim to develop the whole person and help each student reach their potential.
In keeping with the religious and educational philosophy of the Jesus & Mary order, founded by our Patroness Claudine Thevenet, Gortnor Abbey is proud to welcome all students, and seeks to provide a quality educational service for all of the students to the best of its ability.
All school policies, practices and the general atmosphere of the school, allied to the excellent relations among the students, and between the students and the teachers and staff, combine to encourage the participation, integration and
attainment of all the students.
“Caring is at the heart of all we do”
Students are encouraged to work hard and take pride in their progress. Our teachers bring dedication and expertise to every classroom, and students achieve excellent results each year. Most of our students progress to universities across Ireland and beyond, some earning well deserved entrance awards and scholarships. Those students who chose other routes such as apprenticeships and the world of work experience do so with great confidence thanks to the guidance offered throughout Senior Cycle programmes.
‘High standards, genuine care and lasting success’
Gortnor Abbey is a pilot school for the new Leaving Certificate subject Climate Action and Sustainable Development, reflecting our commitment to environmental responsibility. The Mother Aquinas Climate Action Award further encourages awareness and action across all year groups.
To enhance digital learning, we have introduced 1:1 Chromebooks for all incoming first year students and device rental for our Senior Students. This initiative supports collaboration, access to resources and independent study. Looking to the future of exams and the world of work, these skills will be essential.
We want every student to feel secure and supported. Our Student Support, Year Head and Mentor systems help us respond to individual needs. We also have a dedicated Learning Support Department and four Claudine Classes for students with ASD. A structured transition programme helps first years settle quickly and with confidence.
We take pride in amplifying and harnessing student voice across all aspects of school life. Our student council plays an active role in shaping school initiatives, representing the views of their peers and driving positive change. At senior cycle, students contribute to the design and delivery of a flexible curriculum that reflects their interests and aspirations.
This year alone we had a record 29 subjects sat at Leaving Certificate level including; Russian, Mandarin, Italian, Arabic and Portuguese. Student involvement in decision making helps ensure that Gortnor Abbey remains a dynamic and forward looking community.
School life is varied and rewarding. Students take part in sport, music, art and community events that build confidence and friendships. Our teams train and compete on our extensive playing grounds and courts throughout the year, with great success at every level. While music and art continue a long tradition of creativity and self-expression in Gortnor Abbey.
‘Everyone reaching their full potential’
