Mission & Ethos

Empowering Every Student to Flourish

At Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Gortnor Abbey, our mission is to provide a caring, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment where every student is encouraged to reach their full potential.

We believe education should nurture the whole person. Academic achievement is important, but equally important is the development of confidence, compassion, resilience, responsibility, and respect for others.

Our school seeks to inspire students to become curious learners, critical thinkers, and active members of society who are prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

As a Le Chéile school, we strive to create a community where every individual is valued, where diversity is respected, and where strong relationships form the foundation of learning and personal growth.

Through high-quality teaching, pastoral care, extracurricular opportunities, and student leadership, we support young people in becoming confident, capable, and caring citizens.

"Our aim is to help every student grow in knowledge, confidence and character, ready to make a positive difference in the world."

The Le Chéile Tradition

Part of the Le Chéile Schools Trust Family

Jesus and Mary Secondary School is proud to be part of the Le Chéile Schools Trust, a community of Catholic schools committed to excellence in education and the holistic development of young people.

The Le Chéile ethos encourages schools to create environments where faith, learning, justice, respect, and inclusion are lived values rather than simply aspirations.

This tradition influences daily life at Gortnor Abbey and supports our commitment to developing students who are compassionate, responsible, and engaged members of their communities.

While rooted in a Catholic tradition, our school welcomes and respects students from all backgrounds and encourages understanding, dialogue, and mutual respect.

We amplify student voice in daily school life. The student council shapes initiatives, represents peers and drives change. At Senior Cycle, students help design and deliver a flexible, student-led curriculum that reflects their interests and ambitions. This year, students sat a record twenty-nine Leaving Certificate subjects, including Russian, Mandarin, Italian, Arabic and Portuguese.

Living Our Ethos Every Day

More Than Words

Our mission and ethos are reflected in the everyday experiences of students.

They can be seen in classrooms where students are encouraged to ask questions and think independently. They are visible in the support offered by teachers and staff, in the friendships formed across year groups, and in the opportunities available through sport, leadership, wellbeing initiatives, and extracurricular activities.

Most importantly, they are reflected in the culture of care that defines Gortnor Abbey and helps every student feel known, respected, and supported.
